On our 1992 trip to the Southwest, we spent a day at Canyon de Chelly, a national monument on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. The valley floor is used for growing crops and access is limited to guided tours and one hiking trail into the canyon to some anasazi ruins against the cliffs, but roads lead to many viewpoints along the rim. We found lots of beautiful and spectacular scenery. On the hike into the canyon, near the rim, I took a photo which I used for this painting.
